Dr. Dorine Lawrence-Hughes

Coach Overview:
In her stead as an attorney and educator, Dorine Lawrence-Hughes has been mentoring and coaching leaders and managers for over 15 years. She currently provides individual coaching, group coaching, and leadership facilitation workshops for individuals, programs, and organizations. Her most recent engagements include serving as an executive leadership master coach for the University of Michigan Medicine system and as a leadership trainer for UCLA’s University Women’s Leadership Academy, a program she co-created. A strong proponent of peer coaching, she periodically facilitates mastermind groups and leadership boot camps. With over two decades of experience in higher education, Dorine’s most recent professional experience includes service as the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Education at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and as a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Southern California. Her California law practice focused on the representation of private corporations, non-profits, and public entities.
Dr. Lawrence-Hughes has authored multiple chapters and conference presentations on academic leadership and leadership communication in higher education and beyond, including Strategic Use of Conflict Styles (upcoming Sage Skills, 2024), She Just Doesn’t Seem Like a Leader (book chapter, 2017), and “In hindsight. . .”: A Post-Intervention Evaluation of Conflict Management Choices in a University-Community Dispute (presentation co-author). Her most recent leadership workshop and presentation topics include Managing the Middle for mid-level managers in higher education, Leadership Development through Peer Coaching for K-12 leaders, and Leading as an Assistant/Associate Dean for university administrators and faculty.

- Serving a master coach long-standing university executive coaching program designed to train and prepare internal leaders as coaches to support the leadership of executive educational leaders, administrators, and clinicians in academic medicine and a large hospital system; coaching includes debriefing 360s, communication consulting, identification of leadership philosophies, articulation of roles and responsibilities, time management, managing up and supervision; coaching supervision responsibilities include observation and advising of new coaches, periodic coaching check-ins and coaching calibration meetings for continued learning
- Facilitation of a leadership mastermind group supporting seven women leaders in higher education through their leadership opportunities and challenges; meetings held every 3 weeks for 6 months focusing structured conversations on topics regarding leadership, management, strategic planning, and scholarship; outcomes included new academic partnerships, publication opportunities, new leadership positions, and more robust professional networks
